Graveslab in Inishcaltra OR Holy Island

Graveslab

What is recorded here

Inishcaltra is a small island in County Clare where an undecorated graveslab still lies broken in the eastern half of the Saint’s graveyard. Its diagonal fracture crosses the centre like a decision made halfway through speaking. The chamber, walls and surrounding water suggest that burial there was not hidden but placed within a lived religious landscape.
Situated in the E half of the Saint’s graveyard (CL029-009030-) on Inis Cealtra, 12.55m from the N wall and 6.05m from the E wall. An undecorated recumbent graveslab drawn but not numbered on Macalister’s plan of the graveyard (1916-17, pl. XV). The slab has an uneven surface and is broken in two with a diagonal break across the centre. Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 16 November 2015
