Graveslab in Inishcaltra OR Holy Island

Graveslab

What is recorded here

Inishcaltra is a small holy island off County Clare, and one plain uneven graveslab still lies in the southeast corner of its old graveyard. The stone measures about 1.25m long and 0.66m wide, close to the east and south walls, with no carving or number to identify the person beneath it. It may have belonged to a saint, a hermit, a child or a forgotten traveller, but the island keeps that mystery intact.
Situated in the SE corner of the ‘Saint’s graveyard’ (CL029-009030-) on Inis Cealtra, 4.7m from the E wall and 6.34m from the S wall. A plain, uneven graveslab (L 1.25m; Wth, 0.66m) indicated as plain and not numbered on Macalister’s plan of the graveyard (1916-17, pl. XV). Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 16 November 2015
