Grave Yd. (Site of)

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Grave Yd. (Site of) marked a rectangular burial ground on the north coast of Sherky island, close enough to the cliff edge that the sea may have taken it. It vanished between map editions, leaving no surface trace behind. The graves likely fed the Atlantic while the living forgot them, turning memory into salt water and silence.
Grave Yard: This site is indicated on the first edition of the OS map as a rectangular area and is marked only as 'site of' on the second edition. It was located close to the cliff-edge on the N coast of the Sherky island. No surface trace survives. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 1049. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 July 2013
