Grave Yd

Graveyard

What is recorded here

Grave Yd stands on the west side of the Bearna Quay road in County Galway, a rectangular enclosure roughly forty-five by thirty metres that later stretched westward. It is a quiet holder of dead people, perhaps marked by stones now lost or buried under grass, while the living pass beside it on the byroad. The graveyard has no famous name or dramatic event attached, but it keeps the ordinary truth that death belongs everywhere, even in small western towns where the road marks the boundary between the living and the dead.
On W side of byroad to Bearna Quay: the townland boundary runs along centre of this road. Indicated on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as an enclosed rectangular graveyard (c. 45m by c. 30m). Subsequently extended to W. Not visited. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
