Grave Yard

Graveyard

What is recorded here

Grave Yard stands on a gentle south-facing slope in County Kildare, where Taylor's 1783 map marked a ruined church but later surveys showed only burial grounds. The church vanished without visible trace by 1987, leaving behind a modern graveyard crowded with twentieth-century stones. The place holds the quiet oddity of a building erased while the dead remained, suggesting the living stopped coming before the structure disappeared entirely.
A ruined church (KD022-003----) is marked in this area on Taylor's 1783 Map of County Kildare, but only a graveyard (KD022-003001-) is shown on the OS 6-inch mapping (1838 and 1939 editions). On a gentle S-facing slope. There were no visible surface traces of a church when visited in 1987 (SMR file). The graveyard appears to be modern, and virtually all the gravestones date to the 20th century. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 02 December 2011
