Grave Yard

In 1837 the site was described as the 'remains of the old church (WM025-011----), with a cemetery' (Lewis 1837, 326). The graveyard contains the remains of a 19th century C of I church (WM025-011002-) along with the grass covered remains of a possible medieval church site (WM025-011----) standing in the centre of a small rectangular-shaped graveyard. A medieval font (WM025-011003-) was removed from this graveyard to its current location (WM025-034----) in the grounds of the R.C church at Loughanavally. The graveyard (dims. 56m N-S; 77m E-W) contains post-medieval headstones dating from the 18th century onwards and is enclosed by earthen banks and a stone wall. A gatewway into the graveyard is located in SW corner with the remains of a stone stile in centre of graveyard wall along S side. The site of a levelled R. C. Chapel (WM025-154----) is 40m S of the church and graveyard. A well preserved ringfort (WM025-012----) is located 120m to S. Compiled by: Caimin O’Brien Date of upload: 30 July 2014
