What is recorded here

Grave Yard in County Galway is an irregular stone-walled enclosure southeast of its church, narrow enough to cross in moments yet deep enough to hold generations of forgotten burials. One headstone dated 1892 and an iron cross marked the edge of memory when first recorded, while unhewn stones scattered through the southeast suggested more graves beneath the grass. The dead may have lain there long before writing reached them, their names returned to soil and rain.

This irregularly shaped graveyard (N-S c. 45m; ENE-WSW c. 34m), to the SE of the associated church (GA123-021----), is delimited by a stone wall. Access is via a gateway at NE. Only one headstone, dated 1892, and an iron cross were noted on inspection in August 1982 but following a FÁS graveyard scheme in the early 1990s some formal graves were visible in the SE part of it and a number of unhewn set stones probably marked other graves (Gosling 1995, 6).
