What is recorded here
The 1935 Grand National is a rare surviving racing wooden roller coaster whose two trains follow opposite sides of one continuous Möbius-loop track.
What this place is
It is a paired wooden coaster in which two trains appear to race, although both lanes form one continuous track circuit.
People and events
American engineer Charles Paige designed and built it in 1935 for Blackpool Pleasure Beach's large holiday crowds.
How it was used
Two groups boarded side by side and watched their trains appear to race, turning one continuous Möbius-loop track into a competitive ride.
What survives
The listed timber structure, double station, track plan and racing operation remain after successive repairs, including work following a 2004 fire.
Why it mattered
It matters as England's only surviving dual-track racing coaster and one of only two wooden Möbius-loop coasters still operating anywhere.
