What is recorded here
Penmaenmawr's Gladstone Memorial was unveiled in 1899 for the former prime minister whose repeated holidays helped turn the growing Welsh coast town into a fashionable resort.
Why it was made
Public subscribers honoured William Ewart Gladstone a year after his death, choosing Paradise Road near places he had walked during many family holidays.
People and events
Gladstone visited Penmaenmawr eleven times between 1855 and 1869 and returned in 1896. His presence drew attention and wealthy visitors to the newly developing seaside resort.
How it worked
A portrait bust on a short granite column presents Gladstone as statesman, speaker and scholar, making a national political figure part of the town's own public story.
What remains
The 1899 granite base and inscriptions survive in a small triangular garden. The original bust was stolen in the 1970s and Peter London's publicly funded replacement was installed in 1991.
Why it mattered
The monument records how famous visitors could shape a resort's reputation and how local people later restored a lost piece rather than accepting an empty pedestal.
