George Barrington

George Barrington, born George Waldron in 1755 at Maynooth, County Kildare, became a famous London pickpocket before serving seven years' transportation in New South Wales. He robbed the Russian Count Orlov of a valuable snuffbox at Covent Garden theatre and later cohabited with Yeariana, a native woman he described as a perfect model for statuary. Barrington died at Parramatta in 1804, leaving behind a legendary reputation and an apocryphal couplet about leaving their country for its good.
