What is recorded here

Cast-iron gateway, erected c. 1890, to site of former bishop's palace, comprising vehicular entrance flanked by pedestrian entrances, all flanked by decorative square-plan piers, all except one retaining moulded cornices and pyramidal caps with decorative finials. Cast-iron gates with decorative detail, flanked by rubble limestone boundary walls. Set back from street front.
Providing a stark contrast to its immediate and recently altered surroundings, this decorative nineteenth-century cast-iron gateway displays fine craftsmanship and is a striking landmark in the streetscape.
