Gaping Gill is a large pothole and cave system formed in Carboniferous limestone through processes of chemical weathering and erosion. The site has historical significance, with records of human activity dating back to the 16th century and connections to local folklore, including tales of a giant named Gill who supposedly fell into the chasm.
