Gallows Hill stood in Dublin South City, marked on Rocque's 1760 map as the site of the old city gallows. The exact spot has been lost, but the name preserves a brutal function: a place where the city displayed its harshest judgement. Imagine the hill not as a landmark of pride but as a boundary of fear, its shape defined by the shadows it cast across ordinary life.

Rocque's map (1760) of the County of Dublin shows 'Gallows Hill' an eminence where the old city gallows stood (Weston St. John, 1988, 26; Ball, 1900, 318). Not precisely located.
