Gallauns

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallauns is a vanished standing stone in rough pasture, County Kerry, Ireland, recorded on an 1897 map but no longer visible. It may have been an outlier of a nearby stone circle, pulled into the larger shape or lost to time. The absence is the story: a marker removed, forgotten, or never truly separate from the circle at all.
In rough pasture, c. 30m to the NW of a multiple-stone circle (KE108-013001-). A single standing stone is indicated here on the 1897 OS 6-inch map. There are no visible remains of this stone which may have been an outlier of the stone circle. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
