Gallauns

Anomalous stone group

What is recorded here

Situated in level pasture, close to the edge of a low cliff on the E shore of Ballinskelligs Bay, this site comprises three standing stones disposed in a triangular arrangement with the largest stone at SW. The latter stands 2.9m high and measures 1.5m x .2m at base; NE-SW. Similarly orientated, and set 2.1m to the E, is the smallest stone which stands 1.4m high and measures 1m x .25m at base. The third stone, 2.75m N of the last, measures 2.15m x 1.4m x .3m; N-S. Packing stones protrude around the bases of each of the stones (Ó Nualláin 1984a, 72). This site is marked ‘Gallauns’ on the OS maps. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 255. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 28 July 2013
