Gallaun

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallaun is a tall standing stone in County Kerry, recorded both inside Cromwell's Fort and as a separate irregular stone in a valley pasture. The fortran account describes a 3.43 metre upright with packing stones and a leaning slab, while the separate entry measures only 1.6 metres. That gap turns the site into a question: one stone misremembered, two stones invented into one, or a fortran made around an older marker. Chatterton's 1839 remark that it shook easily suggests people kept it standing long before it became a landmark.
In pasture in valley. Irregular stone aligned N-S (H 1.6m; 1.2m x 0.6m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
