Gallaun

This site is located in poorly drained pasture on the NE slopes of Keelnagore, overlooking an extensive tract of bog to N. A large squat standing stone, partly incorporated into a field boundary, stands 2.1m high and measures 1.4m x 1.1m at base; NNE-SSW. Its sides gradually taper towards a flat top. Leaning against it at S is a stone which measures 2.7m long and averages .59m wide and .28m thick. Only one 'Gallaun' is indicated on the OS maps. The above description is derived from A. Likely dating to the Late Neolithic or Bronze Age, the standing stone may have served as a territorial marker or ritual monument. Local folklore sometimes associates such stones with protective spirits or ancient heroes.
