What is recorded here

Gallan is a two-metre stone on the Musheramore foothills, reduced to a leaning shape beside a field fence after removal. It still marks the edge of a forgotten row, waiting for someone to remember why it stood there.

On NW foothills of Musheramore, c. 70m SE of stone row (6529). Removed; stone (L 2.0m; 0.65m x 0.4m) leaning against nearby field fence may be standing stone. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Likely dating to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, this standing stone may have been part of a ritual or funerary landscape associated with the nearby stone row. Local tradition or folklore is not recorded, but such stones often held symbolic or ceremonial significance in prehistoric communities.
