What is recorded here
Gallan is a one-metre square standing stone in West Cork pasture, recorded in the official Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. It may have marked a boundary, a burial or a meeting place, but no human name or date has survived to confirm which. The stone still stands in grass, waiting for someone to remember what it was set to hold.
In pasture. Square stone (H 1m; 1m x 0.75m).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
Likely dating to the Bronze Age, the stone may have functioned as a boundary marker or ritual monument. Local folklore sometimes associates such stones with fairy traditions or ancient territorial divisions.
The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
