What is recorded here
Gallán is a one-metre standing stone in a Cork pasture, joined at its base by a smaller half-metre stone, both tilted across the grass like a sentence broken in two. The larger stone faces east-west, the smaller swings northeast, as if arguing with the first about which way the world turns. Cattle walk past them without hesitation, but a person stopping to touch the rough edge may feel the absence of a handle, a marker or a name. What is missing is not a defect. It is an invitation to remember that some places still wait for the story they were set aside to hold.
Not shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map. In pasture. Stone (H 1m; 0.85m x 0.45m) is subrectangular in plan, long axis E-W. Adjoined by smaller stone (H 0.6m; 0.4m x 0.55m), with long axis ENE-WSW.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
