What is recorded here
Gallán is a one-metre-tall rectangular stone still standing in a Cork farm field, aligned northeast to southwest with a smaller stone caught in the fence beside it and another marker 140 metres away. It has watched seeds go into soil and carts turn in summer for generations. People may have set it, tied ribbons to it or simply avoided stepping on its shadow. The field changed around it while it stayed the same.
In tillage. Upright rectangular stone (H 1.1m; 0.5m x 0.45m), aligned NE-SW. Second upright stone (H 0.4m) embedded in field fence 0.5m to N, may be associated with first. Standing stone (CO085-097---) lies 140m to ESE.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Likely dating to the early medieval period, the name "Gallán" may derive from a saint or holy well tradition, suggesting a possible Christian or sacred site. The alignment and placement of the stones could indicate a ritual or commemorative function, possibly linked to local folklore or pilgrimage practices.
The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
