Gallan

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallan is a vanished standing stone on an east-facing Cork slope, commanding views north and east but leaving no visible surface trace. It may have marked a boundary, a burial, a meeting place or a warning, yet even its stones have gone. What remains is the shape of the loss: a point on a hill where attention still gathers, and forgets itself.
In pasture on E-facing slope with commanding views to N and E. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
