Standing stone, pair

What is recorded here

Not shown on 1842 and 1903 OS 6-inch maps. Hartnett (1939, 159) recorded two stones; one standing '42ins high, 42ins broad and 10ins in average thickness. Near it now lying loosely on the ground is a stone of similar dimensions'. Both removed c. 1945. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
Likely dating to the Early Christian or later prehistoric period, the stone may have had a ritual or commemorative function. Local names and fragmented records suggest possible connections to early Irish saints or territorial markers, though specific folklore is not recorded.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
