Gallán

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallán is a rectangular standing stone in County Cork wetland, measuring 1.05m high and aligned NNE-SSW. It resisted mapping on 1842 and 1904 charts, hiding in plain water where surveyors walked past or forgot. The stone may have marked a crossing, a boundary, or a warning to drown the careless. Its refusal to appear on official maps suggests it belongs to the land, not the archive.
Not shown on 1842 and 1904 OS 6-inch maps. In level wetland. Stone (H 1.05m; 0.75mx 0.32m) is rectangular in plan, long axis NNE-SSW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
