Gallán

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallán is a rectangular standing stone in County Cork, Ireland, rising 1.6m through tillage on a north-facing slope. Its long axis points northwest to southeast, blocking part of the sky and marking the field edge. People may have passed it for centuries, reading weather or luck in its shadow.
In tillage, on N-facing slope. Stone (H 1.6m; 1.7m x 0.8m) is rectangular in plan, long axis NW-SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
Likely dating to the Bronze Age, the stone may have functioned as a boundary marker or ritual monument. The name "Gallán" may derive from a early Christian saint, but the site itself shows no Christian features, suggesting a prehistoric origin with later folkloric overlay.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
