What is recorded here

Gallán is a broken standing stone from a nearby ringfort, reduced to a rectangular slab propped in a farmyard and reused as a workbench. Macalister identified it in 1945 as part of a much taller stone, with another section possibly bearing ogham marks. Its underside carries four scores that look like sharpening cuts rather than deliberate writing, suggesting the stone has spent more time serving people than being read.

In farmyard; recumbent rectangular slab (1.8m x 0.9m x 0.25m), propped on timber supports and serving as workbench. According to Macalister (1945,128-9), part of very tall stone which once stood in nearby ringfort (8224); another section has possible ogham inscription (7992). On underside edge of this stone, facing farmyard, four scores were noted but appear to be marks left when sharpening iron implement. Probably dating to the Early Christian or Iron Age period, this stone may have originally served a ritual or commemorative function before being repurposed as a workbench. Its association with a nearby ringfort suggests a possible link to early settlement or territorial markers.
