What is recorded here

Gallán is a vanished standing stone on a north-facing slope above the Glenlara River in County Cork. Bowman measured its broken stump in 1934, but even that stump has disappeared without a surface trace. The pasture keeps the shape of the hole rather than the stone itself.

Not shown on 1842 and 1904 OS 6-inch maps. In pasture, on N-facing slope overlooking Glenlara River. Removed, no visible surface trace. Noted by Bowman (1934, 156) as 'broken, remaining portion 1ft 10in high, 6ft 3in girth'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Likely dating to the Early Christian period, the name "Gallán" may reference a saint or holy person, suggesting a possible ecclesiastical or memorial function. No specific folklore or use is recorded, but its location overlooking the Glenlara River may have had ritual or symbolic significance.
