What is recorded here
Galláin is a split standing stone in County Cork pasture, recorded by Bowman in 1934 as one of four stones, two of which have vanished without trace. Its vertical quartz vein became the exact line where the rock broke, as if the stone had been cut rather than struck. The missing stones may have been buried, moved or forgotten, but the break remains visible in the grass like a sentence interrupted mid-word.
Not marked on 1842 and 1904 OS 6-inch maps. In level pasture, c. 22m to ESE of standing stone (10174). Stone (H 1.48m; 1m x 2m) is subrectangular in plan with vertical quartz veins; split in two vertically through one of these veins. Long axis E-W. Noted as stone (b) by Bowman (1934, 125) who recorded a total of 4 stones; stone (a) stands c. 22m to WNW (10174); there is no visible surface trace of the other two stones: stone (c) was 'recumbent, 7 yards N of (a) 3ft 8in long, by 2ft 1in by 1ft 4in' (ibid.), stone (d) was also 'recumbent, 7ft East of (c) 3ft 2in long, by 1ft 10in by 11in' (ibid.).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
