Fulacht Fian

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Fulacht Fian is a vanished cooking pit in County Cork, Ireland, hidden beneath marshy ground beside a stream. Roadworks may have erased the last trace of the hole where hot stones once crashed into water to steam food for travelers. The site belongs to memory now, preserved only in written description rather than soil.
In marshy ground beside stream. No visible surface trace; possibly destroyed by roadworks. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
