What is recorded here
Moss and heather still smother the crescent of shattered sandstone where heat and water collided beside the River Deel. The mound stretches thirteen metres through charcoal-rich soil, marking a place where people threw stone into flame until the air itself trembled. Another burnt mound waits seven metres across the spring, suggesting a whole neighbourhood of steam and noise rather than a lonely kitchen. The water still flows north from the base of the slope, carrying the memory of that violent brightness into the river.
In pasture, in a sheltered damp location on the W side of a spring that rises at the base of a slope and flows into the River Deel 15m to N.
This fulacht fia is evident as an elongated, roughly crescent-shaped mound (c. 13m NE-SW; c. 6m NW-SE; H 0.4m) of shattered sandstone in charcoal-rich soil. The curve of the mound encompasses a slight depression on the W side, which may be the location of a trough. The E side of the mound is incorporated into the line of a field bank on N-S axis. Past disturbance to the mound has given it a somewhat irregular shape, and its exact original plan and extend are uncertain. It is covered in mossy sod and heather.
Another fulacht fia (MA038-176----) is located 7m to E, on the opposite side of the spring, and a burnt mound (MA038-179---) is 15m to NW. There is a rath (MA038-033----) is 15m upslope to S.
