Fulacht fia in Ratallen

Situated in a slight hollow in a gently undulating landscape with a small E-W stream that forms the townland boundary with Runnaboll c. 14m to the S. This was discovered in advance archaeological testing (12E0264) for a realignment of the N61 Boyle – Tulsk road when it was visible as a low mound in the landscape and set aside for resolution as Ratallen 1 (Bayley 2012). It was completely excavated (13E0126) in May 2013 and consisted of a spread of burnt and broken stone (dims c. 11.2m E-W; c. 7m N-S; max. T 0.47m) with a slight indentation at N where the primary trough, a wood-based rectangular cut (dims 1.65m N-S; 1.1m E-W; D 0.1m) was overlain directly by a secondary trough, which was an oval cut (dims 2m N-S; 1.65m E-W; D 0.1m) with a wood-lined base.
