Fulacht fia in Poulnalour

On poached, clayey ground almost enclosed by hazel but with a patch of rough grazing S-W-N, and with a small stream immediately to the E which flows S before turning to flow SW, to the S of the monument. Listed as ‘Fulachta fia’ in the RMP (1996) on the basis of a 1994 map annotation by Tom Coffey which indicated four fulachtaí fia at this location (SMR file). During an inspection in 1999, only two were identified, this and a second (CL010-165002-) c. 10m to the S. This fulacht fia comprises a hazel-covered, horseshoe-shaped mound (10m NNE-SSW; 6.8m WNW-ESE; int. H 0.5-0.8m; ext. H 0.5-1.3m) of burnt stone and ashy clay which is open towards the ENE and encloses a small central area (2m ENE-WSW; 2m NNW-SSE). A gap in the central part of the mound runs approx. E-W and divides it in two. Some 4m to the S, a small hummock may comprise more burnt fulacht fia material. A third fulacht fia (CL010-166----) c. 145 m to the ENE and a fourth (CL010-166----) c. 125m to the SE may complete the group of four recorded in the SMR file.
