Fulacht fia in Knockansweeny

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Knockansweeny holds a vanished fulacht fia inside a ringfort, erased before modern cameras arrived. Bowman recorded the hot cooking pit in 1934, then watched people clear it away. Stones and memory collided there: heat for food, forgetfulness for history. The field keeps both truths without apology.
Bowman (1934, 591) recorded a fulacht fiadh in centre of ringfort (12657) and noted that it had been 'cleared away'. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
