Fulacht fia in Killowney Beg — Report the wrong picture

Killowney Beg held two fulacht fia on wet grassland beside a church and graveyard. People may have heated stones to boil water for cooking, cleaning or ritual before the site changed. A machine driver levelled one in the early 1990s during a graveyard extension, and landscaping later covered the other. The car park now occupies the place where hot stones and steam may once have risen.

Situated on wet grassland that has been reclaimed and coverted into a car park with modern graveyard extension immediately to the S and SE of a church (OF022-012001-) and graveyard (OF022-012004-). The remains of a fulacht fia were levelled in the early 1990s by a machine driver when the graveyard (OF022-012002-) was being extended c. 1990 (SMR file 1997). The fulacht fia was located in the field 50m to the SE of the graveyard in the area where the present car park is located. A second fulacht fia (OF022-012007-) now covered over by landscaping works is located c.50m to the E. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload / revision : 18 April 2012
