Fulacht fia in Gortmore (wormhole Ed)

On N bank of a stream in low-lying marshy ground and c.30m from E shore of Lough Corrib. A low mound of earth and stone (D 12m, H 1m), its present D-shaped plan being the result of modern upcast from the stream. At centre, there is a well-defined depression (D 4.8m) defined by two concentric drystone revetments, the inner and lower one enclosing an area 3m across. Traces of a raised causeway (L 2.5m) extend from the mound at WNW. Though no burnt stone or charcoal was noted, the siting and morphology suggest a fulacht fiadh, though the possibility of it being a lake dwelling cannot be ruled out.
