Foulksrath Castle still stands beside a lost fulacht fia, where heat and water worked together long before the castle had a name. The land may have smelled of wet stone, steam and wood smoke when people gathered there to cook, cleanse or mark the passage of seasons. James Ryan and James G. Robinson carried one broken specimen from that place into a wider world of curiosity, preserving a small piece of the fire that once lived beneath Foulksrath.

A fulacht fia was identified near Foulksrath Castle (KK010-056001-), as the proceedings of the Royal Society of Antiquaries describe, 'A specimen from a large heap of stones broken small, which had been submitted to the action of fire, found on the land of M. James Ryan, of Foulksrath Castle; presented by Mr. James G. Robinson, Architect. There was also a quantity of burned earth found in connexion with the stones'.
