Fulacht fia in Fanygalvan

On quite level ground within a large multiperiod field system (CL009-084001-); the land rises from N to NE and slopes steeply c. 50m to the WSW into a ravine. This subcircular fulacht fia (c. 14.1m E-W; c. 11.5m N-S; c. H 1.2-2m) comprises a grass-covered mound of burnt stones and black soil with two disturbed arms (c. 4.8m N-S; each c. 1.1-1.7m E-W) extending to the N. The top of it (diam. 4.5m) is quite flat. At its N limits a ring of stones (diam. 4.8m E-W) protruding through sod cover probably marks the top of a stone-lined trough (see also Coffey 1990, 61). The two incurving arms extend northwards on either side of this feature. The oval space (c. 4m N-S; c. 4m E-W) enclosed between the arms is 0.4m higher than the external ground level. A well which provides water for the cattle lies c. 10m to the NE. Hut sites (CL009-084022-) and (CL009-084023-) lie c. 27m to the SSW and c. 43m to the S respectively.
