Fulacht fia in Curraheen (cork By., Inishkenny Par.)

A spread (8m N-S; 7.5m E-W; D 0.03m) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil was discovered during archaeological testing in advance of the construction of the N22 Ballincollig Bypass and was excavated in 2002. The spread was in a flat marshy area c. 10m N of the Maglin River and excavation revealed that much of its original extent had been removed during agricultural activities and had become incorporated into the topsoil. A subcircular pit (2.35m x 2.1m; D 0.45m) was found beneath the spread. It contained a primary fill of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil and a secondary fill consisting of a mix of re-deposited subsoil and heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil. A group of fulachtaí fia and burnt mounds (CO073-137----, CO073-139----, CO073-140----, CO073-141----, CO073-142----, CO073-143----) c. 180m to the NE were also discovered and excavated in the course of the same road scheme.
