Fulacht fia in Coom (carbery East (w.d.) By.)

In boggy pasture, on the S side of a stream. A rectangular wooden trough, 'about seven feet [2.1m] long, four feet [1.2m] wide and two feet [0.6m] deep', was found intact on the bank of a small stream in the 1930s (NMI file). An upright flag formed one of the ends of the trough while each side consisted of a slab of oak. The floor and other end were made of smaller planks of oak. Half of a burnt plank was found behind a whole one on one of the sides. The trough was surrounded by heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil. According to local information, this burnt material was spread over the surrounding area during land reclamation. Further pieces of wooden planks were found during these works. Only occasional heat-shattered stones are now visible on the ground in the area. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
