Fulacht fia in Coolbane (orrery and Kilmore By.)

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Coolbane holds a fulacht fia, a boiling-place for food or baths, set in tillage thirty metres from a ringfort. The spread of burnt material still marks the site where heat and water met. People may have gathered there to cook, clean or celebrate before the field closed over the stones.
In tillage, c. 30m NW of ringfort (12341). Spread of burnt material noted. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
