Fulacht fia in Clonfert Demesne

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

No visible trace survives in County Galway because field clearance levelled the low mound of blackened earth and burnt stone. Yet the vanished fulacht fia still smells of hot stones and boiling water, while local memory preserves it as a fairy fort. The land may have swallowed the workshop, but it did not erase the heat or the purpose.
In low-lying reclaimed pastureland overlooking bogland to the N. This possible fulacht fia, which was defined by a low mound of blackened earth and burnt stone, was levelled during field clearance. It was known locally as a ‘fairy fort’ (information from C. Cunniffe). No visible surface trace survives. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 25 November 2019
