What is recorded here

Mud, fire and water still mark the Castlebernard demesne, a fulacht fia hidden beneath grass and scrub beside an ornamental lake. People may have thrown hot stones into water there, heating baths, cooking food or cleaning tools until the land itself remembered the steam. The lake can be seen to the west, but the older fire lies lower, patience-made, waiting for rain or curiosity to reveal its shape again.
Grass-covered spread of burnt material in scrubland on Castlebernard demesne. Ornamental lake to W. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
