Fulacht fia in Carrigacooleen

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

That is a tall claim for a kitchen. More likely a hunting camp, a travelling kitchen or a misread ringfort. The story is that people cooked or ate there, not that the site is large. Keep the size out of the claim.
Broker (1937, 12) recorded a fulacht fiadh 'nearly as big as a fort with hole in centre, 5 feet high over ground' in Con Kelleher's farm. Exact location not known. Second fulacht fiadh (CO048-100---) c. 5m from this. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
