Fulacht fia in Capnagower

One of four fulachtaí fia (MA085-009005-, MA085-009007-, MA085-058----) situated in an oblong peat basin that runs ENE–WSW and is delimited on all sides by low hillocks. The fulacht fia is situated c. 31m SW of MA085-009007- in a flat, but very stony, boulder strewn area on the northern side of the peat basin. This mound is smaller and lower than MA085-009007- and is also less well defined. It is slightly lunate in plan (WNW–ESE 10m, SSW–NNE 7.2m, H 0.5m on SW side) and opens towards S. Heat- fractured stone is exposed on the summits of both arms of the fulacht fia and also around its base at ESE, S and SW. On top of SE arm is an oblong area of slabs and small boulders measuring 2.5m × 1.5m, its long axis running roughly N–S. However, none of the slabs and boulders (0.75m × 0.6m × 0.3m max.) are bedded in the mound. They appear to have once formed a small rectangular feature now totally dilapidated, possibly a small turf- drying stack. The above description is derived from: New Survey of Clare Island.
