Fulacht fia in Capnagower

One of four fulachtaí fia (MA085-009006-, MA085-009007-, MA085-058----) situated in an oblong peat basin that runs ENE–WSW and is delimited on all sides by low hillocks. The fulacht fia is situated c. 18m ENE of MA085-009006-, also among boulders, once again situated right on edge of the peaty floor of the basin. A small grassy mound, oval in plan (NW–SE: 3.6m, NE–SW: 4.8m, H c. 0.5m), with heat-fractured stone exposed on the northern and north-eastern sides. Immediately S of the mound is a small irregular cutting in the surface of the bog (1.4m × 1.6m) that is between 0.15m and 0.2m in depth. This has exposed a scattering of burnt stone around the stump of an ancient (?) pine tree preserved in the bog. The above description is derived from: New Survey of Clare Island.
