Fulacht fia in Ballyoran

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Hot stones shattered and rained into a shallow trough, sending steam across the grass near the Shanowennadrimina Stream. People may have heated water for washing, cooking or gathering, while the mound grew layer by layer from repeated fire and patience. The bypass works revealed the place only because the land was being changed, yet the stones still mark a time when heat, water and human hands made an ordinary field feel alive.
A mound (9.1m N-S; 6m E-W; D 0.35m) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil was discovered during topsoil stripping in advance of the construction of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass and was excavated in 2003. It was located c. 120m E of the Shanowennadrimina Stream. It overlay a subrectangular unlined trough (1.7m N-S; 1.2m E-W; D 0.3m). A burnt mound (CO035-128----) was found 2.5m to the N. (O'Connell 2006g, 56) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
