Fulacht fia in Ballynamanagh East

Thirty-five metres south-southwest of its companion, this fulacht fia lies almost hidden beneath the soil of Ballynamanagh East. Ploughing revealed a broad oval of dark earth and fire-cracked stone, measuring nine by six metres, where ancient heat once transformed water and rock. The field has swallowed the pit, leaving only a faint shadow in the ground. Yet the cracked stones still remember the violence of fire, waiting for someone to imagine the steam rising through the Galway air.
