Fulacht fia in Ballyloughaun

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Ballyloughaun in County Galway may hold a lost fulacht fia, though no visible trace remains to mark the exact spot. The earth has swallowed the stones and water channel, leaving behind only a vague memory of heat and steam. Perhaps people gathered there to cook food or cleanse wounds, using the simple brilliance of heated rocks and flowing water before leaving no monument at all.
A possible fulacht fia was noted to the E of the road through Ballyloughaun townland (pers. comm. Mr T. Coffey 1985). On inspection no visible surface trace was noted and its precise location was not determined. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 12 July 2017
