Fulacht fia in Ballyhoura

In level re-seeded pasture, c. 200m to the SSW of higher ground which is planted with coniferous trees. A large horseshoe-shaped fulacht fia was noted here in 2007 (pers. comm. Mary Sleeman). When visited in 2008, however, the mound had been levelled and only a spread of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil surrounding a pond (4m N-S; 8m E-W) was visible. The concentration of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil (c. 20m N-S; c. 20m E-W) is most noticeable to the NW of the pond where the grass is sparser.
