Fulacht fia in Baile Na Saor Beag — Report the wrong picture

Hot stones cracked and hissed in marsh water, filling Baile Na Saor Beag with steam and the smell of cooked flesh. People came from nearby fields to share food, watch the river or simply sit beside the heat. The mound still holds its shattered stones, waiting for hands remember the work done there.

A horseshoe-shaped mound situated in rough, marshy pastureland on the E bank of a small river. Its overall dimensions are 15m N-S x 13.5m E-W and, apart from a narrow gap at S, it completely encloses a sub-circular area measuring 4.5m x 5.2m. The mound rises .6m above this central area and is composed of small burnt and fire-shattered stones. A further 3 fulachta fiadh have been recorded 250m S on the bank of the same river.
